Who's owning the film industry in Ghallywood?

Over the years, professional acting has remained one of the most profitable occupations in Ghana. Obviously, the Ghanaian movie industry popularly known as Ghallywood has become one of the blossoming African movie industries.

The Ghanaian film industry is in full swing and it has been on a steady growth for the past decade. The quality of the movies produced has been getting better by the day. 

All this wouldn't be possible without the influx of great talent and their tireless efforts. 

Let's have a look at some of the actors that are making it big in the Ghanaian film industry.

1. Majid Michel

Majid Michel is one of the most admired Ghanaian movie actors who has received many nominations and awards for his roles in some hugely popular movies.

He was born in 1980 through the union of a Ghanaian mother and a Lebanese father. He was raised in Accra –his birthplace –and received primary education at St. Theresa’s Primary School.

He developed his love for acting at a young age when he was part of the Drama Club at his secondary school. The school’s Drama Club performed on Emancipation Day in Cape Coast Ghana.

The famous actor has featured in numerous movies including but not limited to Nation Under Siege, House of Gold, The Three Widows, Reason to Kill, Her Excellency, Shattered Mirror, Gangster, Agony of Christ, Bursting Out and Shakira. he got a role in his first movie “Divine Love” where he collaborated with Jackie Aygemang and Van Vicker.

From 2009 to 2012, he was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the Africa Movie Academy Awards. Fortunately, he won the award through his 2012 nomination and was later nominated for the same award in 2014 and 2017.

In 2015, Majid Michel admitted that his wife was responsible for his success and he thanks God for her. The same year, he and his wife renewed their wedding vows. The famous actor also said how he is attracted to his wife.

2. Chris Attoh

Fully known as Christopher Keith Nii Attoh, Chris Attoh is a renowned Ghanaian who blends professions as a producer, television presenter, actor, and on-air personality. He was born in 1979  and he is widely recognized for his role as Kwame Mensah” in Tinsel a Nigerian soap opera.

For his secondary education, he was enrolled in Achimota School and afterward, he proceeded to Accra Academy.

So far, the popular Ghanaian has starred in several movies including Sinking Sands, Love and War, Flower Girl, A Trip to Jamaica, Six Hours to Christmas, Single and Married, Happiness is a Four-Letter Word and Journey to Self. Besides acting he is a director, and has directed a couple of works such as One More Day (2014). Kintampo (2015).

He has graced and made several dramatic appearances on radio, television, films and ceremonies in Ghana, London, South Africa and other international scenes.

Chris established a production and multimedia company called aFactory Entertainment Ltd. It offers services like documentaries, corporate videos, TV programming, TV Commercials, film and radio jingles. He founded aFactory with the objective to change the way viewers enjoy television shows, commercials, jingles and films.

Chris is a brand ambassador to iflix in Ghana. Also, he has advertised for HappyDent Gum, Kasapa, Lipton tea.

3. John Dumelo

John Dumelo is a popular Ghanaian actor with several awards and nominations to his credit. At the 7th Africa Movie Academy Awards, John Dumelo received a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Earlier, he had been nominated for an award titled “Most Promising Actor” at the 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Born in 1984, John Dumelo is said to have begun acting at a very young age and he has remained an active actor since 1991. His debut movie was titled “Baby Thief’’. He was enrolled in Achimota School for secondary education. Having finished from Achimota School, he proceeded to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering. Had it not been for his passion for acting, he would have become an engineer.

Immediately after his studies John went for the small screen where he appeared  in several TV series. Soon he found his way onto the big screen because of his charisma. He has acted along side the likes of Ini Edo, Jackie Appiah, Mijaid Michael, just to mention a few. John has starred in a number of movies and some of them are Men in Love, Love Alone, Single Sex, The King is Mine, 4Pl, y, and Holy Secret.

John has won the Best Africa Actor Award at the Africa Entertainmnet Awards in Malaysia and he also won the Most Outstanding Actor Award at the Afro Australian Movies and Music Awards.

Apart from his career in acting, John is also a real estate manager, a partner in an IT firm and he's also a farmer. Seems Mr Dumelo is able to manage his multi-faceted career perfectly.

4. Van Vicker

Van Vicker is a well-known Ghanaian actor. At the 2008 Africa Movie Academy Awards, he was nominated for two awards namely “Best Upcoming Actor” and “Best Actor in a Leading Role”. Born in Ghana in 1977, Van Vicker is best known as a film actor and he has remained active since 2000.

Van Vicker received an education at Mfantsipim School.

The first career venture of Van Vicker happened in 1997 when he was twenty years old. His career started not as an actor, but as a presenter. He auditioned for the presenter position on the new TV station, called “TV3 Network”, after seeing the advertisement for this job in the newspaper.

He decided to audition for the television series “Sun City”, which was his first big project as an actor. He had a role of the fine arts student Leroy King Jr, who was born in the United States and came to Sun City for the educational purposes. These series ran for ten episodes and became very popular in Ghana. Van Vicker really enjoyed his time on this show and decided that it would be great for him to star in more big movies.

Real fame came to Van Vicker after his role in the movie “Beyonce”, which very quickly made him a superstar. Since then he's starred in many other movies that have received nothing but great reviews from the viewers. He has also produced five movies of his own, the most popular of which is called “Friday Night” and is starring Nana Ama McBrown.

Some of the awards he has to his name are Pan African Creative Actor (2011), Best Actor African American (2009) and Best African Caribbean Actor (2009). He recently added another award to his long list of achievements after winning the “Best actor in a Lead Role” at the 2019 edition of Ghana Entertainment Awards.

Aside from taking care of his own career, he is also very concerned about the young people who want to be actors. This is why he created his own foundation, which is called “Van Vicker Foundation”, and the purpose of it is to help beginners become famous actors by giving them all the necessary skills and training.

5. Prince David Osei

Prince David Osei is a famous Ghanaian actor who previously had a career as a banker. Born in Accra, Ghana in 1983, David Osei combines roles as a director, producer, model and actor.

For his basic education, he was enrolled in Accra-based De Youngster’s International School. Having completed his primary education, David Osei was admitted to Accra High School for his secondary education. A graduate of the University of Ghana, Prince David Osei is said to have studied Theatre Arts, Sociology and English.

After his graduation, thinking he would land a role in the film industry, based on what he had studied, David Osei secured employment in one of Ghana’s banks. However, he eventually abandoned his banking occupation in a bid to fulfill the dream of becoming an actor.

He began professional acting in 2005 when he was admitted into Ghallywood. In recognition of his key roles in a movie titled “Fortune Island’’, Prince David Osei was awarded “Best Actor of the Year in Ghana’’ at the 2006 City People Entertainment Awards.
