Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. was born to Charles Nii Armah Mensah Snr and Elsie Evelyn Avemegah on October 17, 1984, at the Police Hospital in Accra, Ghana. His father is an attorney, a politician, and a businessman.

Shatta Wale went to Seven Great Princes Academy in Dansoman, an Accra suburb, where he showed an interest in the arts and starred in the popular drama series By the Fireside at Ghana's National Theatre.

He then continued his schooling at Winneba Secondary School, where he completed his second cycle.

He began his early music career under the alias Doggy, which he adopted in honor of his favorite DanceHall singer at the time, Yoggy Doggy.

Then he changed his name to Bandana, which propelled him to popularity after a single hit song. He died in the music industry and was buried for years, only to resurface with a new name, Shatta Wale, a new identity, and a great catalog of hits after smashes.

He was commonly known as Bandana in 2004. In a very nascent Ghanaian dancehall genre at the time, he established street credibility.

Within a few years, he had mastered his craft and had traveled to Jamaica to learn more about dancehall. He has worked with some of Ghana's most talented musicians. In 2004, he collaborated with Tinny on the song "Moko Hoo," which was one of the most popular songs in Ghana at the time.

He later took a vacation from the music industry after releasing his debut album, "Bandana from Ghana." After a musical break, he re-branded himself as Shatta Wale and released his single "Dancehall King" in 2013, which was an instant smash with his fans.

Shatta Wale was announced as a brand ambassador for Guinness Ghana Breweries in 2014, alongside Reggie Rockstone, EL, and Fuse ODG, for the Made of Black campaign. He was also named the Storm Energy Drink brand ambassador.

He got a new job as a brand ambassador for Kasapreko Company Ltd, a Ghanaian maker of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, in 2017. After the contract was finalized in September 2017, he was revealed.

2014 - Maiden GN Bank Awards as the People’s Choice Male Musician of the year.
2014 - African Artiste of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards.
2014 - Best Performer of the Year at the BASS Awards.
2014 - Artiste of the Year and “Dancehall King” at the Ghana Music Awards.
2015 - 38th Most Influential Ghanaian by E-TV Ghana.
2016 - City People Entertainment Award for Ghana Musician of the Year (Male).
2016 - Nigeria Entertainment Award for African Male Artist of the Year (Non-Nigerian).
2019 - Music Video of the Year and Male Act of the Year at the 3Music Awards Ghana

The artist has been awarded so much for his amazing work, his award stand must probably be falling over by now.

He was the first Ghanaian to organize a digital event, dubbed the Faith Concert, on YouTube. The event was held to give hope to Ghanaians and the rest of the world in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Ghanaian Ministry of Communications chose him and Kuami Eugene, a highlife musician, as the headliners for the COVID-19 app virtual launch concert on Monday, April 13, 2020.

On Saturday, October 17, 2020, he celebrated his 36th birthday with a large birthday party at his East Legon home, which was attended by family and friends.
