It was a moment no Ghanaian could ever forget, least of all soccer star Asamoah Gyan...

The year was 2010, the event; the Soccer World Cup in South Africa and the moment of truth was a penalty awarded to the Black Stars in a quarter-final match against Uruguay which would determine which team went home and which would progress to the finals.

We all know what happened next...an embarrassed Asamoah missed the penalty and became the laughing stock and target of angry fans.

But a whole decade later and Ghanians have proved they are still not able to forgive the star who calls himself 'Baby jet'.

Tweeps opened old wounds this week when they reminisced about the heartbreaking moment, dragging Asamoah for filth on the timeline over it

It all started when a tweep shared a video re-enacting the most memorable World Cup moments in recent history - including Gyan's football faux pas.

The clip went viral and even London born Love Island star Mike Boateng (of Ghanaian heritage) commented on it.

"To this day I’m still not over that Asamoah Gyan penalty miss! ", the reality TV star tweeted.

Both tweets snowballed into an avalanche of hate and cruel jabs towards the former Sunderland striker.

Some even blamed the coronavirus pandemic on the soccer star!

Meanwhile, Asamoah has vehemently denied that he is retiring from 'the beautiful game' in a recent interview with TV3.

He also spoke candidly about the fateful moment, confessing that it still haunts him to this day.

He told the news channel; "Till today, any time alone, it still haunts me..."

"Sometimes I feel like the world should go back again so I can redeem myself, but I know this is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

"I accept that because there is nothing I can do about it. I went there to save my country, but I ended up being the villain, which I accept because I know how people feel"

Poor Asamoah has suffered a great deal from his epic football fail - perhaps fans need to find it in their hearts to forgive him first so he can finally forgive himself.
