Shatta Wale is no doubt the “King of Dancehall”. He’s had so much success and is loved but also hated in equal measure. His songs resonate with lots of people which probably explains their popularity. However, his tone and bragging nature rub people the wrong way. Shatta Wale has well-documented beef with industry colleagues and just about anyone who seems to do better than him. His love life is also one that courts attention. Why is he this controversial? Here's Shatta Wale's biography.
Shatta Wale whose real name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. is one of the biggest reggae-dancehall musicians in the country. Shatta Wale, aged 37, was born on 17 October 1984 in an Accra hospital to his parents, Charles Senior Mensah and Elsie Evelyn Avemegah.
His parents separated when he was still young. Hence, he mostly lived with his father who influenced his love for music. His dad played reggae music at home as well as take him to meet his relatives who are half Jamaican in the United Kingdom. This led to his love for reggae music.
Shatta Wale's love for music led to a rift between Shatta Wale and his father. After high school, he decided to pursue music against his father's will. Consequently, Charles Senior Mensah threw him out of his house. Shatta Wale had to live that period of his life in the streets. He was in the ghettos of Nima but eventually, made his music work for him.
It seems that Shatta Wale and his father are on good terms now. He also serves as his advisor.
Shatta Wale got a very good education. His father is a big proponent of education and made sure that his son went to school and completed his education. He attended Seven Great Princes Academy at Dansoman.
It’s here that Shatta Wale immersed himself in the arts. His talent was evident to the point that he earned a role in a series “By The Fireside” shown on the National Theatre Ghana. From there, Shatta Wale went to Winneba Secondary school where he furthered his love for the arts.
Shatta Wale chose to pursue his music career against his father’s will. His father wanted him to pursue law but his love for music was irresistible. It’s not really clear whether he’s gone to college.
Shatta Wale’s interest in music was sparked by his father's love for reggae music. He started to practise arts when he was in school. The availability of music lessons allowed him to train his vocals and learn how to play the keyboard.
Post his High School, he focused on music and in 2004, released his first-ever hit single “Moko Hoo”. He made his debut with the name Bandana. The song was so successful that it won him his first nomination for the Ghana Music Award. The other songs he made were “No Problem” and “Obaa Yaa” followed.
Bandana as he was known then took a long break from music. He resurfaced in 2013, again, with his current name, Shatta Wale. Shatta is a Jamaican word that means Gangster. Wale is the short form for World Alerted Lyrical Entertainer. During his absence from music, Shatta Wale said that he was in Jamaica to learn more about dancehall.
He returned to the scene and performed songs like “Telephone No”, “Anastastia”. He then went on to perform some of his biggest hits “Dancehall King”. It won him the Artiste of the Year Award at the 2014 Ghana Music Awards.
From then on. Shatta Wale’s career took off.
In 2014, Shatta Wale did a collaboration with Nigerian artist Davido “Wine Ya Waist”. It went on to be voted as the most listened to music by the Guardian.

The pair have since separated for undisclosed reasons.

Shatta Wale has a daughter named Charrisa. She was born on 10 July 2010.
Shatta Wale’s father Charles Senior Mensah is a politician, businessman and lawyer. He has an affinity for reggae music. He was very strict about Shatta Wale’s education that he pressured him to finish his high school education. Charles Senior had envisioned a law career for his son only for him to back out of it and pursue music.
In 2018, Charles Mensah condemned preachers who “prophesied” his son’s death. He took issue with the way the message was delivered. Consequently, Shatta Wale’s father filed a report at the Criminal Investigation Department in Ghana.
Shatta Wale’s mother Elsie Evelyn Avemegah, is a businesswoman. He separated from his father when Shatta Wale was still young.

Shatta Wale doesn’t hold back. He says it as it is. As a result, he tends to rub people the wrong way. His sense of grandeur is also something that has led to feuds with fellow celebrities. Here are Shatta Wale’s controversies.
If you listen to Shatta Wale, you’ll hear him say that he doesn’t care about awards. However, back in 2013, when he lost the Dancehall Artiste of the Year to Kaakie, he stormed out of the awards ceremony. Shatta Wale went on to abuse the event organisers CharterHouse, and its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He even made an entire song, "Letter To Charter House" to express his displeasure.
Later on, Shatta Wale apologised to Charter House.
The rivalry between two of the biggest Ghanaian dancehall artists, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy started long before they became household names in the music industry. Stonebwoy dominated a contest “Battle Days” that both took part in.
Since Shatta Wale rebranded himself, from Bandana to Shatta Wale, in 2012 he’s enjoyed continued success. Stonebwoy followed and also climbed to the top. This fuelled their rivalry and started the never-ending debate of Ghana’s true Dancehall King.
Shatta Wale is very consumed with his beef with Stonebwoy. Many times, he’s the one who sparks or keeps a feud going through his social media posts or media interviews. They’ve even reconciled publicly but then fell out all over again.
For instance, in 2015, Stonebwoy invited Shatta Wale to the stage after he won an award in a public show of unity. However, it was not the turning point that many would have hoped for.
In 2018, they were at it again. Fans were treated to an exchange of words on social media and in interview broadcasts. Shatta Wale even proceeded to make a song “No Mercy For The Cripple” aimed at Stonebwoy who has a knee condition that forces him to limp.
Things further escalated when Shatta Wale, who fondly stirs up this beef, stated that Stonebwoy turned him down for a collaboration. Stonebwoy was infuriated. Not just with this allegation but also with another where Shatta Wale insinuated that he was responsible for his mother’s death. For Stonebwoy, he won’t work with Shatta “as if nothing happened.”
The rift continues and the Ghana Music Awards was the battleground once again between Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy. Stonebwoy was on stage receiving his award after he won the Dancehall of the Artist during the 2019 Ghana Music Awards when Shatta Wale invaded it. Stonebwoy pulled out his gun. This led to a premature end of the show.
This led to the arrest of the two artists. Later, the shows' event organiser Charter House banned the two artists indefinitely and stripped them of their awards. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture stepped in and the ban was lifted in February 2021. The two artists can submit entries for the awards.
Sarkodie is the other musician that Shatta Wale is beefing with. Their feud supposedly began when Sarkodie traded a shoot with Shatta Wale for a Nigerian artist. Sarkodie did not respond to these claims.
In another incident, Shatta Wale accused Sarkodie of backstabbing him on an agreement they had. According to Shatta, they had been booked by an international company to perform outside the country. They had agreed on a fee. Afterwards, Sarkodie went on to accept a lower rate without his knowledge. This led to the end of the agreement.
All the while as Shatta Wale made these allegations, Sarkodie kept his cool. His response to Shatta Wale broke the airwaves. In a song titled “Advice”, he addressed Shatta Wale’s claims.
In an interview, Sarkodie revealed that as much as he wants to have the good old times back with Wale, he cannot ignore everything and pretend they are fine. This is the reason why he came up with the song “Advice”.
Shatta Wale just can’t keep himself out of the news. This time he went international with one of Nigeria and Africa’s biggest artists, WizKid. Shatta Wale went on record saying that he doesn’t consider Wizkid a superstar. He further said that he won’t get star struck if he met Wizkid.
Shatta Wale took a dig at Nigerian artists on a social media post in which he stated that he didn’t need them to fill up a stadium for his event in Ghana. Burna boy jumped in and stated that African artists should work together and not divide the continent.
Of course, Shatta Wale got back. He challenged Burna Boy to a contest. The latter asked for a fistfight to which Wale subtle declined. He stated that he respected Burna Boy’s mother and wouldn’t physically fight him. He went on to claim that the Nigerian sexually assaulted some women.
As Wale was ready to further escalate the tension, Burna Boy moved on and did not get back to any of his comments.
Shatta Wale caused panic when news filtered through that he had been shot by unknown men outside his house in East Legion. His spokesman confirmed the reports and said that Wale was receiving medical attention. Later on, it was revealed that all this was a prank. The dancehall musician was arrested alongside other men.
Prophet Cosmos Walker Affran of Cosmos Ministries “prophesied” the untimely death of Shatta Wale and asked people to pray for him. He attributed his prophecy to the “hatred” that Shatta Wale is facing.
Shatta Wale has some of the best cars money can buy. He’s lined-up up to nine top of the range cars in his garage. He’s been gifted some of the cars he owns. Here is the list:

Just as Nigerian singer Davido was flaunting his Rolls Royce, Shatta Wale announced his return to social media with a bang. He unveiled his newly acquired Rolls Royce which is estimated to have cost him upwards of $330,000.
However, fans are in doubt as to whether Shatta Wale owns the Rolls Royce. Some opine that it might be for a music video. Nonetheless, the musician stated in a radio show that he indeed owns all of his nine luxurious cars including the Rolls Royce.
As that happens, Shatta Wale swiped at Davido for flaunting his black Rolls Royce. Davido’s Rolls Royce cost him over $400,000. The reggae-dancehall artist stated that he does not depend on his father’s wealth to buy things. Rather, he uses his own money. Davido’s father is a wealthy businessman hence the comments from Shatta Wale.
Well, if Shatta Wale has nine cars, then he must have even a bigger house to accommodate them all. He revealed that he owns three mansions, one located at an undisclosed location in the capital, Accra.
Shatta Wale is one of the richest musicians in Ghana. His net worth is estimated to be $6.2 million. He makes his money through his music, endorsement deals and the business he runs.
Both Shatta Wale and Wizkid appeared on the Forbes List of the top 30 richest Africans in 2021. WizKid is in the top 10. His net worth is calculated at $21 million. Shatta Wale ranks 23rd with a net worth of $6.2 million.
Thus, according to Forbes, Wizkid is far richer than Shatta Wale.
Samini is a respected reggae and dancehall artist. As of 2021, his net worth is estimated to be $2 million. This means that Shatta Wale is richer than him with a net worth of $6.2 million.
Criss Waddle’s net worth is not clear but he is reported to be worth around $1 million. Chances are the Shatta Wale is richer than Criss Waddle.
Sarkodie is a popular name in the music scene. In fact, he is one of the richest musicians in the country. He tops some of the Ghanaian rich lists with an estimated net worth of $9 million. With arch-rival Shatta Wale at $6.2 million, Sarkodie is richer.
Stonebwoy's net worth as of 2021 is about $3 million whilst Shatta Wale’s stands at $6.2 million. Shatta is richer than Stonebwoy.
Over the course of his career which spans over a decade, Shatta Wale has received numerous awards. If you are wondering “How many awards does Shatta Wale have?” here is the answer to that. Shatta Wale has over 71 recognised awards for his name. He’s received 120 nominations.
Shatta Wale has been globally recognised for his music. He has collected numerous international awards. He won his sixth International Reggae and World Music Awards in 2021 to become the first African artist to reach that tally. He’s also won the Ghana Music Awards UK and Ghana Entertainment Awards USA
Shatta Wale claims that he has more than 150 awards to his name. Well, most people aren’t convinced despite the numerous titles he has to his name. Reports indicate that he has 71 recognised awards and 120 nominations.
Stonebwoy on the other hand has some 25 awards to his name, far less than Shatta Wale. Even so, Stonebwoy has won the BET Awards for the Best International Act - Africa.
He became the first male Ghanaian and dance-hall singer to clinch the prize. He’s also been nominated for the same.
Is there an awards list that lacks the name of Wizkid? His music is loved in Nigeria and across the continent. This shows in the types of awards that he has won over the years. Wizkid has won some of the most prestigious awards globally including BET Awards, Grammys Awards, and The Headies Awards amongst others.
WizKid had definitely won lots of awards but the exact figure of his total is not clear. Some put it at over 30, over 40 and even over 80. Therefore, with Shatta Wale’s having 71 recognised awards, we can’t really make a comparison.
Sarkodie has been named the most awarded musician in the country. He has amassed over 100 awards with more than 176 nominations. Ghana Music Awards, BET Awards for Best International Act - Africa 2012, BET Hip Hop Awards Best International Flow 2019, EMY Awards for Best Entertainer in 2016 are just some of the accolades to his name.
At this point, you can definitely tell that he has won more glamorous awards than Shatta Wale and has more in total than his nemesis.
It’s a long list.
