2005 was the year he set the ball rolling and participated in rap battles such as the “Kasahare Level”, a contest organised by Adom FM. During this event, Sarkodie came across Duncan Williams and Castro from Duncwills Entertainment who influenced his career.
The duo introduced Sarkodie to the CEO of The Last Two Music Group, Hammer of the Last Two who was impressed by Sarkodie's performance and signed him on a five-year contract.
The record label featured Sarkodie in "Edem's Album" as they wanted to give him a gradual entry into the music scene. Sarkodie agreed to the arrangement but after a while, he wanted to focus on making his first album. However, he felt that Hammer delayed his progress as he was so caught up in producing Edem’s work that he quit his label.
Sarkodie immediately published his first album "Makye" in 2009. "Baby" was the album's lead single and gave him credibility that he went on and performed alongside American rapper Busta Rhymes in his concert in Ghana.
Sarkodie's first hit song “I’m In Luv With You” with soul musician Efya came in 2010 and it was so good that it was nominated for two awards - Hip Hop Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

Sarkodie alleged that the mainstream media overlooked him in the early stages of his career. In an interview with a UK-based DJ, Sarkodie said that the radio didn’t understand his songs and thus they didn’t pay attention to them. According to him, the rise of the internet provided him with a platform that led to his breakthrough.
However, many in the mainstream industry disagree with the rapper and pointed out several big shows and presenters who played him. They further stated that the streets gave him his biggest opportunities and not the internet as he claims.
