Well it's no surprise that football has become one of the most lucrative industries in most countries if not the whole world and a number of people are making millions out of it. Talk about the likes of Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar. 

Football has become the number 1 sport with the largest number of audience. The football stars make lots of money with every game that they play. Throw in bonuses, sponsorships, and marketing, then the sums of money being talked about can move into the millions.

1. Michael Essien

Michael Essien known as Michael Kojo Essien, is a professional footballer with over 50 caps for the Ghana national team. Currently the richest footballer in Ghana, he is quite versatile and can be adapted on three different positions on the field. His interest in football was sparked by his father, who was a former local professional player.

Born in Accra, Ghana in 1982, Michael Essien has made football fortune playing for several football clubs including Chelsea, Bastia, Milan, Real Madrid, Panathinaikos, and Lyon. He made most of his football success at London-based Chelsea where he played from 2005 to 2014 and won several trophies.

Over the years, he got to be nicknamed the 'Bison' for his powerful and fearless play. He drew the attention of the major European football clubs, and in 2003 Essien transferred to Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon, France. In 2006, he was nominated by FIFA as World Player of the Year.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid player runs the Michael Essien Foundation (MEF) which is a local Ghanaian charity organization founded to give opportunities, hope and inspiration for the underprivileged children. He wishes his efforts through his charity will also reach all children in similar conditions throughout Africa.

Michael Essien undoubtedly has a taste in sports investments. In 2006, he was reported to be in talks to buy Irish club, Limerick FC.

2. Asamoah Gyan

Born in 1985, Asamoah Gyan is the former captain of the Ghanaian national team and serves in the role of a striker for Kayserispor.  During his time with the Ghana national team he has been able to make Ghana the third country to qualify for the world cup quarter-final behind Senegal and Cameroon.

At national level, he has reached a great milestone as Ghana’s all-time top goalscorer with a total of 51 goals. In addition, he is Africa’s all-time leading footballer in the World Cup with a total of 6 goals already.

Over the years, Asamoah has seen himself move from one club to the next and scooping a lot of awards along the way. He bagged 11 goals from 39 appearances when he was playing for the club Series A Udinese, for 5 years. While with this team Gyan was sent to Modena on a two-season loan spell and he spent time there from 2004 to 2006. During this time he scored 15 goals from 53 appearances.

Prior to his move to his former club side Kayserispor in 2017, Asamoah Gyan played for several other teams including Rennes, Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG and Al Ahli Dubai.

Apart from football, Asamoah saw himself being sworn in as the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nation Youth Association for Ghana.

He also runs several businesses that are keeping his bank account balanced. In 2012, he launched Mama Vits Noodles and Rice a company that imports food products that require instant cooking such as noodles and even rice. 

Gyan is also a music lover and in 2015, he launched the musical band called the Asa Band. Asamoah Gyan owns ‘Jetlink Events & Logistic’. The company is known to organize events and construction of trusses, stages, public address systems, and tents for events.

3. Andre Ayew

Andre Ayew's full name is André Morgan Rami Ayew is a professional footballer serving in the role of a forward for the Ghanaian national team and the Swansea City of England.

He was born in a family where football was more than an ordinary sport played and this had a very significant role in cultivating his talent. As the son of an award winning soccer player, this meant that Andre had big shoes to fill and let's just say his successful career speaks for itself.

Born in 1989 in Seclin, France, Andre Ayew began his club-level senior career in 2007 playing for Marseille where he bagged 45 goals from 152 appearances. During his 8-year stint at Marseille, he was sent to Lorient from 2008 to 2009 and then to Arles Avignon from 2009 to 2010.

He joined Swansea City in 2015 and later moved to West Ham United in 2016 after bagging 12 goals from 34 appearances for the former. This is where Andre Ayew signed a three-year contract with West Ham United. The contract was signed at a fee of £20.5 million. In 2019, he returned to Swansea City where he also became the captain of the team.

His career seems to be paying him pretty well as he's able to get himself any ride that he wants. One other thing to note is what that drive way is made of.

4. Kevin-Prince Boateng

Kevin-Prince Boateng is a Ghanaian footballer born in West Berlin, Germany, in 1987. His current club side is ACF Fiorentina and he can be adapted both as a midfielder and as a forward.

He began his club-level senior career in 2004 playing for Hertha BSC and later moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2007. He was awarded the Fritz Walter Bronze Medal Award in both the Under-18 and Under-19 category in 2005 and 2006. After his two-year spell at Tottenham, he joined Portsmouth in 2009 but left the club side only in 2010 after having bagged 3 goals from 22 appearances. Currently at ACF Fiorentina.

He played in Serie A side AC Milan from 2010 to 2013 and recorded 10 goals from 74 appearances. In 2016, he marked a return to AC Milan but later left the club for a second time after recording 1 goal from 11 appearances.

Kevin is also a singer who released a rap song on the World Star Hip Hop channel in August 2018. He released the song under the alias PRIN$$ Boateng named “King”.

Late last year, Kevin revealed that he does not enjoy playing the sport anymore like he used to before. According to him, football is more about numbers not loyalty meaning that if you are not making enough money for the club you are playing for, you can be easily replaced.

5. Kwadwo Asamoah  

Kwadwo Asamoah is one of the richest footballers in Ghana. He plays as a left midfielder, left wing-back or central midfielder for Italian Serie A club, Inter Milan.

Kwadwo Asamoah has spent most of his playing career in Italy. He has played for so many clubs including AC Bellinzona, Torino FC, Udinese FC, Juventus and currently in Inter Milan.

Asamoah was given his international career debut for the Ghana National football team in 2006, Black Stars. Ghanaian footballer Asamoah represented in 2008 and also 2010 of the African cups of the National team.

In the year 2012, Juventus-Serie A champions got Asamoah and his teammate Maurice Isla. Juventus paid 9 million euros and 9.4 million euros, respectively, for him and Maurice, half of the payment of the player’s license.

In 2018 his Inter Milan contract commenced after having been with Juventus for 6 years. His talent on the soccer field has also seen him gain the recognition that he deserves.
